What are the benefits of a surface mounted RTD?
By Mike Blair
Surface mounted RTDs deliver accurate, reliable temperature sensing in a compact, low-profile format, ideal for space-constrained applications where precision and easy integration matter most.
When critical processes depend on precise temperature control, accurate temperature feedback is essential. Surface mounted RTDs (resistance temperature detectors)Â are an excellent solution for applications that require temperature measurement directly on the surface of a component, assembly, or device. They are a strong choice for compact assemblies, with either flat or curved surfaces, and applications with limited space or requiring non-intrusive monitoring.

How do Surface mounted RTDs work?
RTDs use the relationship between temperature and electrical resistance. As temperature changes, the resistance of the RTD sensing element changes as well. This change is measured by a control system and converted into a temperature reading. Thanks to the consistent nature of resistance measurement, RTDs are known for their accuracy over long periods of time. They are also appropriate for applications that require electrical noise or vibration resistance or are used in demanding environments.
Surface mounted RTD options
Birk’s SK Series Surface Mount RTDs are standalone temperature sensors encapsulated in flexible Kapton with pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing for quick and reliable installation. They can be paired with Birk heaters as part of a complete thermal solution or used independently in virtually any application requiring temperature sensing and control.
The SK Series comes with lead wires, so it is ready for direct connection to a controller. This option is fast and universal, ideal for prototyping, testing, and low- to mid-volume applications where flexibility and ease of integration are important.
Birk also offers Integrated Surface Mount RTDs, where the RTD is engineered directly into the heater assembly. These RTDs provide accurate temperature monitoring within a compact, fully integrated thermal system, providing customers with simplified installation and a more streamlined overall assembly.
Common applications
Common applications for surface mount RTDs include medical devices and diagnostic equipment, semiconductor manufacturing systems, aerospace and defense assemblies, and much more. The Integrated Surface Mount RTD have become increasingly popular in aerospace and other high-performance applications where space constraints, weight reduction, and fully integrated assemblies are important design considerations.
Standard vs. custom solutions
Birk Manufacturing offers both standard and custom sensor solutions. When a standard configuration is not the right fit, Birk’s engineering team evaluates your application, mounting surface, temperature range, lead requirements, materials, and integration needs to develop the best solution. Surface mounts can be configured by ohms, lead length, number of leads, and backing options such as pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA), foil, or a combination of the two.
